Algeria has acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. Any document heading for Algeria now only need an apostille.

FAQs

Will an apostille on its own be enough for Algeria?

Before 9 July 2026, no, as applicants are required to complete the Consulate’s legalisation/attestation step after the apostille.

From 9 July 2026, apostille-only acceptance should become the baseline under the Convention, but in practice, you may still see transition “edge cases” (e.g., a local authority still requesting a consular stamp).

What is the legalisation route for UK documents going to Algeria?

For most UK-issued documents, the Algerian consular legalisation stage expects the document to be apostilled (or authenticated) first, and some documents must be certified by a practising solicitor or notary before that.

Do I need a solicitor certification or a notary public first?

Sometimes. The Consulate notes that “certain types of documents” require prior certification by a practising solicitor or notary.

(Practically: whether it’s needed depends on the document type and how it was issued/signed.)

Do you legalise documents issued outside the UK (but being used in Algeria)?

This is a common misconception. UK apostilles are issued for UK public documents / UK signatures (or those properly in scope for the UK Legalisation Office). For anything non-UK, the route usually starts in the country of issue
