  1. UK FCDO apostille – proves the UK signature or seal.
  2. Consular legalisation at the Malaysian High Commission in London adds the final stamp of approval from Malaysian authorities.

Legalisation path – summary

    UK public documents (birth, marriage, death, ACRO, Companies House, etc.) → FCDO apostille → Malaysian High Commission, London.

    Private or commercial documents (contracts, academic awards, powers of attorney) → UK notary / solicitor certification → FCDO apostille → Malaysian High Commission, London.

Malaysia will not accept e-apostilles. A physical paper apostille must be fixed to the original (or certified copy).

Practical notes for Malaysian High Commission in London

  • Photocopies – take one clear photocopy of every document; the consular clerk keeps the copy and returns the apostilled original.
  • ID copies – when legalising personal documents (marriage certificates, Certificates of No Impediment, etc.), enclose a copy of each person’s passport.
  • Payment – Cash only, payable when you lodge.
  • Timetable – counter hours are 10: 00 – 12: 00, Tuesday to Thursday; the High Commission releases stamped documents five business days later.
  • Special routes – if another embassy in London has already attested the document, or if it was pre-legalised by a Malaysian mission abroad, the London High Commission will add its stamp without an FCDO apostille; confirm acceptance with your Malaysian consignee first.

Foreign documents (non-UK documents) can be attested if:

  • The foreign embassy in London has stamped the documents, and then the Malaysian Embassy can attest.

  • Foreign documents must be attested by the Malaysian Embassy in the country of origin. Then the UK-Malaysian embassy can attest in London.
  • The UK FCDO apostilles the documents, then the Malaysian High Commission can attest in London.
