Flag of VietnamFor a UK-issued document to be valid in Viet Nam, it must go through a two-step legalisation:

  • 1
UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) apostille (or the Irish DFA / Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man for documents issued there).
  • 2
Embassy of Viet Nam in London consular attestation.

For documents from a UK Overseas Territory – Anguilla, Bermuda, BVI, Cayman, Gibraltar, Turks & Caicos – first obtain the territory’s own apostille, then the UK FCDO apostille, and finally the Vietnamese attestation.

Legalisation requirements for Vietnam

  • Personal vs. commercial – both categories require the Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate stamp unless the Vietnamese recipient confirms that an apostille alone is sufficient (rare).
  • Bundling – related pages can be tied under one notarial certificate and covered by a single apostille.
  • Foreign documents – accepted if they meet the FCDO’s “foreign document” apostille policy.
  • Copies to lodge: provide one photocopy of each apostilled page; the embassy/consulate keeps the copy.
  • Application form – complete and sign the consular legalisation form (an agent may sign on the applicant’s behalf).
  • Return by post – include a self-addressed, prepaid envelope.
  • Payment: cash only at the counter; no cards or bank transfers.
  • Process reminder – UK documents must be apostilled by the FCDO, then attested by the Vietnamese Embassy in London before use in Vietnam.
