Flag of EthiopiaEthiopia is not a party to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention, so a UK FCDO apostille is only the middle step. After the apostille, every document must be stamped by the Ethiopian Consular Department in London.

  • 1

UK FCDO apostille (after any required notarial or solicitor certification).

  • 2

Consular legalisation at the Ethiopian Consulate in London.

We are an FCDO-registered legalisation agent and make daily trips to the UK’s only Apostille Office in Milton Keynes to obtain apostilles. We can also lodge documents at the Ethiopian Consulate and return them to you by courier.

Legalisation path for Ethiopia – summary

  • 1

Certify – UK FCDO-registered solicitor or notary if the document is not already a UK public instrument.

  • 2
Apostille – obtain the FCDO apostille (standard, premium, or e-apostille).
  • 3
Consular attestation – submit the apostilled original, photocopy, cover letter and pre-paid return envelope to 17 Princes Gate; pay the fee by card and collect (or receive by post) once stamped.

Once the document carries both the UK apostille and the Ethiopian consular seal, it is fully valid throughout Ethiopia.

Key points – what Ethiopia will accept:

  • General, private, or commercial documents

    1. UK notary/solicitor certification (if the paper is not already an original UK public document).
    2. UK FCDO apostille.
    3. Consular legalisation at the Embassy of Ethiopia in London.
  • Documents issued in Ethiopia
Authenticate first with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Addis Ababa, then present it at the London Consulate for stamping (no UK apostille is required).
  • Documents issued in a third country
Must be authenticated by that country’s competent authority and apostilled by the UK FCDO before submission to the Ethiopian Consulate.

Processing times:

  • Walk-in submissions: usually legalised the same afternoon.
  • Postal/courier submissions: allow 2–3 working days at the Consulate, plus mailing time (expect ≈ 10 days door-to-door).

Submission checklist:

  • Apostilled original document (or the MFA-Addis stamp if the document is Ethiopian).
  • One photocopy of each document.
  • Include a cover letter with your contact details and return address.
  • Pre-paid, self-addressed Royal Mail Special Delivery envelope (postal/courier cases).
  • A reason must be given for the Legalisation; if it is for the Employer, you must provide supporting documentation, such as a Contract / Employment letter.

Practical notes:

  • Opening hours: lodge 09:00 – 13:00 · collect 14: 00 – 16: 00, Monday–Friday.

  • Translations: English is widely accepted. If the recipient in Addis Ababa requires Amharic, have the sworn translation completed after the consular stamp so the translator can cite the fully legalised English original.
  • Status checks: do not call until 10 working days have passed since you posted the file; after that, call 020 7589 7212 and quote your name and submission date.
  • Third-country papers: the Consulate is strict—ensure they already carry a foreign MFA stamp and a UK apostille; otherwise, they will be rejected.

Consular fees (paid directly to the embassy):

  • £80 per commercial or private document.
  • £50 per personal document for applicants who are Ethiopian nationals (Ethiopian passport or ID card required).
  • The fee is “per seal”; bundled pages under one notarial certificate attract one fee.
  • Payment is by debit or credit card only.
  • If you apply by post or courier, a consular officer will telephone you to take card payment once your file is logged.

FAQs

Many current third-party consular guidance notes that legalisation submissions are accepted on specific days (often Monday and Wednesday) rather than every weekday. We always verify the current submission window before we lodge—because these rules change without notice.

Typical processing quoted is 2–3 working days at the Consulate (plus delivery time if you’re posting). Walk-in outcomes can be faster when lodged early, but we treat that as “possible”, not guaranteed.

Usually:

  • The apostilled original
  • One photocopy of each document
  • A short cover letter (we can draft this)
  • A pre-paid return envelope, if you want it posted back
  • And (for some work-related cases) a stated reason plus supporting proof (e.g., employment letter/contract), because the Consulate can ask for it.

The key concept is “per seal”. If multiple pages are properly bound under a single notarial certificate (where acceptable), it may attract one consular fee—but only if the Consulate treats it as one sealed instrument. We structure the certification step to avoid accidental “per-document” charging.

These are where rejections happen most. The Consulate usually expects the document to already be authenticated by that country’s competent authority, and then (where required for use in the UK chain) correctly legalised before it’s presented in London. If you tell us the issuing country, we’ll map the compliant route before you spend money.
